Auckland's youngest volcano sits right in the harbour, and the summit walk is one of the best half-days in the city: lava fields, pōhutukawa forest and a 360° view back over the skyline. Take water and proper shoes — there's no shop on the island and the scoria track is rough underfoot. Check ferry times before you go.

If you only do one museum, make it this one. The Māori and Pacific galleries are the strongest in the country, and the building itself — on the crest of the Domain — is worth the walk up. Pair it with a wander through the Domain's Wintergardens next door, which are free.

Free to get into the main collection, so it's an easy rainy-day call in the city centre. Strong on New Zealand, Māori and Pacific art, with ticketed international shows a few times a year. Albert Park is right behind it if the weather turns.

The highest natural point on the isthmus and the quickest way to understand Auckland's shape — dozens of volcanic cones, two harbours and the city laid out between them. The summit is pedestrian-only, so walk up from Mt Eden Village and grab a coffee on the way down. Stay off the crater floor; it's tapu.

Forty-five minutes from town and a different world: black sand, big surf and Lion Rock standing over Piha. Te Henga (Bethells) and Karekare are quieter alternatives. These are dangerous surf beaches — only swim between the flags when lifeguards are on, and never on your own.

Touristy, yes — but on a clear evening the view from the top is genuinely the best orientation you'll get. Go late afternoon to see the city in daylight and lit up. Thrill-seekers can do the SkyWalk around the outside or the SkyJump down the side.

The best family day out in the city, with a big focus on native New Zealand wildlife and conservation work. Combine it with a walk around Western Springs lakeside park next door. Arrive at opening in summer — the animals are more active before the heat.

A guided climb over the arch of the Harbour Bridge gives you a view of the Waitematā you can't get anywhere else. If that's too tame, the bungy from the pod under the bridge is the city's signature adrenaline hit. Both need booking.

A reliable rainy-day pick for kids: the underwater shark tunnel and the Antarctic penguin enclosure are the highlights. It's on the Tāmaki Drive waterfront, so finish with a walk or bike ride along to Mission Bay when the rain clears.
