Rotating filter beans from roasters around the world and Coffee Supreme on espresso, plus kombucha and Taiwanese tea. The K Road filter destination — but food is cabinet pastries only, so come for the brew, not a feed.

Plan it: Closes at 2pm (2.30pm weekends), so it is strictly a morning stop. Top of K Road, a short walk from Karangahape station.

The polite, sometimes-black-tie hole-in-the-wall window near the Art Gallery that has since grown into three sites. Order the Montblanc — coffee under a cap of thickened cream — and expect Eighthirty beans, smooth jazz and never a bad white coffee.

Plan it: Lorne St trades 7.30am–3pm Mon–Sat and is closed Sundays. Aotea station is three minutes away.

The only spot in Auckland where you pick your own green beans — around twenty varieties — choose light, medium or dark, and watch them roasted in front of you on a Japanese jet roaster before they are ground and brewed. Pour-over with a custom blend is the move.

Plan it: The shop runs 6.45am–3.30pm daily but the roaster only fires 8am–2.30pm — come inside that window or you miss the whole point. Onehunga station is six minutes away.

Al Brown's hand-rolled, wood-fired Montreal-style bagels, boiled and fired on site every day. Order the Yodi — pastrami, habanero mustard, grilled Swiss and pickle — or the Holey Smoke with smoked fish and crème fraîche.

Plan it: Open 7am–3pm, seven days. City Works Depot has its own car park, which is rare this close to the CBD.

The High Street flagship of the much-loved Auckland roaster, roasting since 2009 — a uni-years-and-beyond favourite still pulling one of the most reliable flat whites in the CBD, with a grab-and-go cabinet of pastries and sandwiches.

Plan it: Weekdays only, 7am–3.30pm — it is closed both weekend days. High St has no parking; use the Victoria St car park, or walk five minutes from Britomart or Aotea.

Camper Coffee beans roasted on site inside the historic Kent Flour Mills building, and a kitchen doing Kiwi food with a twist: Korean fried chicken, beef cheek dumplings, loaded fries and hotteok. Newmarket's quietly elite coffee stop.

Plan it: Weekends and public holidays are walk-in only, 8am–4pm — book if you are coming midweek. Newmarket station is five minutes away.

In Kingsland since 1995 and still the original roastery behind three CBD espresso bars. Beyond espresso they will run you a Chemex, a syphon or a cold brew — one of the few Auckland roasteries where all three are standing options.

Plan it: Open 7am–3pm weekdays, 8am–3pm weekends. Kingsland station is two minutes away, which matters: New North Rd parking disappears entirely on Eden Park event days.

The Ponsonby room of one of New Zealand's most exported coffee names — blends and single origins to drink or take home, with Biscotto Bakery operating out the back (the Sicilian pistachio biscuit is the pick).

Plan it: For the full operation, the flagship Allpress roastery is at 8 Drake St, Freemans Bay, beside Victoria Park — where Michael Allpress ran his original 1986 coffee carts.

Founded by Young-Jin Cha, New Zealand's first Q Instructor, so the wall of certificates is earned. Order the Black Hole Latte — iced Americano under sweet cream — with a salt butter roll or the cinnamon brioche.

Plan it: Roomy seating and free business-park parking on Apollo Dr — one of the few genuinely easy-to-park specialty roasters in Auckland.
